ADOBE

Adobe is a passion John has had his entire life, growing up in a home built in the 1930s out of 12 inch thick Adobe brick walls. All are located in New Mexico, a few in the southern portion of the State, most are however located in the northern high desert. Adobe was many properties that bend to its favor. It is inexpensive to make an adobe brick, using in most cases the dirt found nearby. As a result it has always been a highly sustainable and low impact for of construction. The bricks are sun dried resulting in a low carbon footprint. A 12 inch thick wall has a 12 hour thermal time lag, which lends itself to a perfect high desert diurnal wall construction in the dry desert where the cool temperatures of the night radiate into the interiors of a space 12 hours later when it’s hottest during the daytime. The reverse is true as well, with the hot daytime temperatures radiating into the spaces in the cool of the night. Adobe has sculptural qualities like no other construction material, lending itself to sculpted forms complementary to the surrounding hills, mesas and desert forms.
