The Pueblo of Santa Ana hired us to design a new Traditional Building, best described as a community center and a Kiva. The program called for a new building to replace the Pueblo’s older Traditional building which they had outgrown. The building has offices for traditional language instruction, cooking facilities for traditional dishes such as Piki Bread ovens, two large ceremonial practice rooms with fireplaces, processing facilities for their traditional hunting and farming harvests and exterior courtyards for larger gatherings. The plan calls for a sacred square within a sacred embracing circle, symbolic of our place within and on Mother earth. Circular windows on the East and West represent the celestial geometries of the heavenly Sun and Moon bodies. Courtyard gardens have been planted with the Pueblo’s traditional medicinal herbs and plants, such as Pinon and Sage. Major building materials have to be durable and fireproof, so steel and plaster were used along with a beautiful polished concrete floor system and traditional adobe for the embracing and tapered courtyard walls. The Pueblo supported installation of a rooftop Photovoltaic solar system that provides the building’s electrical power. Excess power generated by the system is returned to the electrical grid.
