LOCATION: Ojo Caliente, New Mexico

DATE: Completed in 2001

COST: $400,000

SIZE: 1,800 s.f.

MAJOR MATERIALS: Adobe walls, tin metal roofing, slate tile floors.

SYSTEMS: Passive Solar heating and cooling, gas fired boiler

ENVIRONMENT: This site is located on the high desert plateau east of Ojo Caleinte, NM. It is surrounded by Carson National Forest with breath-taking 350 degree views. Black Mesa provides a backdrop to the south and the Sangre de Christo Mountains rise to the east.
                                   
PROGRAM: The client had recently moved to Ojo Caliente from the Midwest for health reasons and wanted to create a healthful country residence.  The building program called for the following:

  • construction of a new two bedroom and two bath residence
  • living room large enough to accommodate a grand piano and firesplace
  • efficient kitchen and dining areas

DESIGN: The Environmentally Integrated Home is the major design element throughout the house.  This is emphasized through the use of the following design elements:

  • Solar and sacred earth Geometries
  • Relationship with the area's traditional and sacred building forms, shapes, materials and colors
  • Integration with natural geometric forms and light
