PROJECT: New Library

LOCATION: Santa Clara Pueblo, New Mexico

DATE: 2008

COST: $2,000,000 (estimate)

SIZE: 6,485 s.f.

MAJOR MATERIALS: CMU walls, Tile and Solar reflective roofing, carpeting.

SYSTEMS: Passive Solar heating and cooling, gas fired boiler.

ENVIRONMENT: This site is located on the Pueblo of Santa Clara’s main compound, near Espanola, NM. Black Mesa provides a backdrop to the south and the Sangre de Christo and Jemez Mountains rise to the west and east.

PROGRAM: This design solution expands the Library into the existing Administration area, the existing book drop area and creates a second story addition with terrace and balcony areas.

DESIGN: Environmental and Sacred Integration is the major design element throughout the Library. This is emphasized through the use of the following design elements:

  • Solar and sacred earth Geometries
  • Relationship with the area's traditional and sacred building forms, shapes, materials and colors
  • Integration with natural geometric forms and light
